The collection includes Samuel C. Vance's papers relating to the U.S. Army in the West and his administration of the paymaster's office. Also contained are items regarding his Lawrenceburg mercantile business, land interests, the Fort Wayne Land Office, and Ohio and Indiana politics. Lawrence Vance's papers include correspondence and other items relating to his business and real estate interests, and the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad. Other correspondence includes letters from his sons. Post-Civil War papers include family correspondence and financial papers.

Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. Vance operated a general merchandise store in Indianapolis and was a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad and other railroad lines.
